HANDICRAFTS OF RAJASTHAN

Ladies ornaments - necklace

Floor Coverings

Rajasthani floor coverings are superb in workmanship and a popular item in the export market, especially carpets which are as fine as 600 knots. Ezquisite carpets in traditional and contemporary designs, woollen druggets or 'Namdas' and hand-woven cotton durries also known as 'Panja' durries are the popular floor coverings.

Raja Man Singh I of Amer pioneered carpet manufacturing in Rajasthan. When he acquired several exquisite carpets from Herat (Afganistan) for his palace, he also invited artisans from there to train the local workers. Eventually Jaipur, Bikaner and Amer became the prominent centres of carpet weaving.

The carpet industry of Jaipur further received a boost during the reign of Maharaja Swai Ram Singh II. Jaipur is known for its quality carpets. The design are mostly Persian and Caucasian. The motifs consist of human figures, flora, fauna, landscapes and geometrics.
