Rajasthan excells in a wide range of ornaments using Emarald, Diamond, Pearls, Kundan, Garnet, etc made especially in Jaipur and Jodhpur. Jaipur is a famous export centre for precious and semi-precious gem stones.

Jaipur has been famous for the diamond industry throughout the world. The artisans can beautify anything as per the choice of customer by modelling the stones and special polishing. Johri Bazaar in Jaipur is very famous for this trade and is the biggest centre in Asia for shaping and polishing of the diamonds. The designs of the jewellery made by the artisans are basically on the pattern of Mugal and Rajput styles.

One of the best known Jaipur enameller was Shri Deen Dayal Meenakar. He has made a small elephant of gold which is considered one of the best work of enameling. He was later awarded National Award for the enameling work in 1968. He passed away in 1985; and his son Shri Rajkumar Sankit and his grandson Deepak Sankit are now following his work.

Enamelling (Meenakari)

Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan has been the centre of the art of enamelling since ages. Chessboards, bukkas, wineglass, bowls, toys, sword handles, guns, ladies ornaments and articles of daily use were decorated with enamelling work. Normally enamelling is done on gold, silver, brass, copper but its glare, art, transparency, lusture and most the red enamel can be best seen and comes to full life only on articles made of pure gold.

A single item could combine the traditional Jaipur enamel with quasi enamel of Pratapgarh called Thewa. In this work, a silver wire frame is covered with delicately patterned gold leaf, and sunk into a softened layer of green enamel or glass.
