HANDICRAFTS OF RAJASTHAN

Textile- Block Printing Beadsheet, Saree, Covers, etc

Block printing is a very traditional method of printing. Different wooden block are prepared with different designs to print on fabrics by using eco-friendly dyes, which creates an ultimate demand in domestic and international market. Printing is done either by the direct method or by the resist-printing process. Special embossed effects are obtained by khari printing in which gold or silver powder is mixed with various other ingredients and painted directly on to the cloth. The light and painstakingly printed Kota Doria sarees are a rage with women during summers.

Rajasthan is the heartland of hand- block printing. Sanganer is virtually flooded with block-makers and printers to the extent that textiles are hand-block printed in the courtyards of homes.

Jodhpur and Pali specialize in bold patterns- Pipad, carefully designed and painted in red, black, blue and green. Bhilwara and Ahar produce patterns composed of dots popularly known as chunri patterns. The basic colour are maroon and black. Dabu is the lacal name for the resist print process in which mud, resist paste is applied by hand, using wooden block to seal the fabric form the effect of future treatment. This type of printing is done at Bagru, Baotra and Akola. Jaisalmer has a special style of resist-print done only in winter and that too at night, as it needs very low temperature.

Printing is a well-established sector in Rajasthan. The town of Bagru excels in delightful circular designs in dark glowing vegetable colours- printed on bedsheets, table linen & clothes. However, certain areas are renowned for their particular printing skills - Balotra, Barmer, Pali, Jaisalmer, Pipad in Jodhpur, Akola near Chittorgarh, Ahar in Udaipur and Kaladera.

In Rajasthan, each community has its specific features that are evident and explicit through their clothing. Embellishment is done through hand-block printing, tie-and-dye technique and a great variety of embroideries and stitchery. Every village and town has a few families of dyers, known as rangrej or nilgars as well as printers or chhipas.
