World famous Dilwara Temple, Mount AbuTHE HILL STATION- MOUNT ABU

Mount Abu is located in the south-western corner of Rajasthan and is Rajastha's only hill station. It is also a major pilgrim centre. The Aravalli range that cuts across Rajasthan reaches its greatest height at the Guru Shikhar. Interestingly, this is also the highest point between the Nilgiris in the south and the Himalaya range up North. It is situated on an isolated plateau about 1219m (4000ft) above sea level. In Hindu legend, Abu is referred to as the son of the Himalayas.

Places of Interest:

1. Dilwara Temple: Mt. Abu is famous for its Dilwara temples, a Jain pilgrimage with the best carvings in medieval India.

2. Agni Kund: Accor to legend, the four Agniced clans of the Rajput were created in the Agnikund which is near Gaumukh. At a little distance is the marble image of Nandi who was rescued by the mighty serpent Arbuda. Carved out of a rock,the hill temple of Arbuda has a very attractive setting.

3. Guru Shikar: A little distance from Achalgarh (12 km from Mt. Abu) is Guru Shikar, 1720m (5646 ft), the highest peak in Mt.Abu.

4. Achalgarh: Famous for its Shiva temple, it is 11 kms from Mount Abu by a motarable road. On the bank of the Mandakini tank, near the temple are a few old statues.

5. Gaumukh: It is 9 km from Mount Abu,and offers an interesting excursion.It has an ancient temple and a small tank which is always filled with water flowing through a cow's mouth made of stone.

6. Nakki Lake: This is an artificial sheet of water,studded with little islets and overhung by the Toad rock, so named because it looks like a gignatic toad about to spring into the water. It is quite near to Dilwara. According to the legend this lake was dug by the gods with their nails, hence the name. Skirting the lake are a no.of temples and cave dwelling of ascetics. For pleasure trips on the lake there are motor launches and boats.

7. The Crags: This is a quite spot on a high hill facing the town and can be reached by a track passing through forests. It prevents a grand view of the plains 1219 m below.

8. Sunset Point: This point provides an excellent view of the setting sun. In India this place offers the 2nd most beautiful sun set only after that of Kanyakumari.

9. Robert Spur: It is situated on a sheet of rock with steep precipie on lither side. It unfolds a fascinating picture of Nature's beauty.
